“A Brush with Fame,” an annual painting exhibition, is now on display at Pace Academy. The exhibit, sponsored by BINDERS Art Supplies and Frames, features artwork by 50 students from 12 Atlanta-area schools. “A Brush with Fame” will run in the Pace Academy Fine Arts Center through Feb. 5, 2012. A reception for the artists and their families will take place Jan. 29 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., also in the Fine Arts Center. A representative from the High Museum of Art will judge the competition, and five first-places prizes will be presented.

“‘A Brush with Fame’ has grown significantly since last year’s inaugural competition,” says competition organizer Donice Bloodworth, a member of the Pace Academy Visual Arts faculty. “We’re excited that so many students and schools have chosen to participate, and we’re grateful for BINDERS’ support of the exhibit and the arts at Pace.”

As part of its Gifting Program, BINDERS donates five percent of every dollar spent by school supporters to its partner schools. Since the program’s inception, the store has donated more than $20,000. “Our ability to give back will only grow as we garner more support from these organization’s members,” says Stuart Shapiro, Account Executive with BINDERS. “We’re fortunate to have partnered with Pace for this competition, and are proud to support the school’s arts initiatives.”

BINDERS sells fine art products, creative gifts and picture frames at discounted prices. BINDERS has strategically built its business on becoming not only a source of supplies, but of creative inspiration as well. The store is committed to promoting personal growth through education, arts awareness and by giving back to creative communities. • Zwecker, Rushton to Play at Amherst, UPenn

Pace Academy seniors Haley Zwecker and James Rushton have committed to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Zwecker will play basketball for Amherst College’s Lord Jeffs, while Rushton will join the Quakers, the University of Pennsylvania’s men’s soccer team.

Both students have been outstanding athletes for the Pace Academy Knights. Zwecker, a point guard, helped lead the Knights to a second-place finish in the 2011 state tournament. During the 2010-2011 season, she had 354 points and set a new school record with 188 assists. Zwecker was named to 2011 Georgia Athletic Coaches Association All-State First Team, to the Region 5A All-Region Team and to the Macon Christmas Tournament All-Tournament Team.

"Haley is a savvy point guard who is leaving a remarkable legacy at Pace,” says Knights Head Coach Regina Tate. “She plays by instincts that were laid during her days of playing against boys in the NYO leagues of her youth. I am honored to have had the opportunity to coach a young lady who allowed me to truly get to know her as an athlete and a person. Haley cares deeply for her teammates, her family, her academics and her sport participation. Amherst is lucky, and I know Haley will contribute positively to the winning tradition already established there."
Zwecker also plays varsity soccer for the Knights and is this year’s team captain. She was named to the 2010 and 2011 All-Area Teams and received the 2010 Playmaker Award.

Rushton, the Knights’ center midfielder, was part of the 2011 Area Championship team that reached the Final Four with a 14-3 record. Last season, he had 14 goals and 8 assists, including a hat trick against Athens Academy and two goals in a 3-1 victory over Class AAA’s North Atlanta High School. He was named to the All-Area Team in 2011.

"James is a talented player who has a unique understanding of the game,” says Knights Head Coach Brooks Fleming. “He can truly dictate the flow of a match through his style of play and skills. His presence in the midfield will be greatly missed next year."
